What is faraid, and how this calculator works

Faraid is the Islamic law of inheritance set by the Qur'an and Sunnah — it fixes how much of a person's estate each relative receives. This calculator follows the Hanafi school: first the heirs with fixed shares (ashab al-furud) receive their shares, then the remainder goes to the residuaries ('asaba). If the shares add up to more than one, 'awl applies, and if nobody can take the remainder, radd applies. The children of a predeceased son or daughter inherit under Bangladesh's Muslim Family Laws Ordinance 1961 (section 4).

Before distribution, the funeral costs, debts and a bequest of up to one third are deducted — details in the four steps of distribution (Bengali).

Usual shares at a glance

HeirShare
Husband1/4 with children, otherwise 1/2
Wife1/8 with children, otherwise 1/4 (several wives share it equally)
SonEverything left after the fixed shares — each son twice each daughter
DaughterWithout a son: one daughter 1/2, two or more together 2/3; with a son: half a son's share
Father1/6 with a son; 1/6 plus the residue with only daughters; the whole residue with no children
Mother1/6 with children or two or more siblings, otherwise 1/3
Brothers and sistersNothing if there is a son, son's son, father or paternal grandfather

Here "children" means sons, daughters or a son's children. For a particular family use the calculator above — who is excluded and why is explained in the hajb article (Bengali) .
