Square feet ↔ decimal

Square feet to decimals: when and how

Ads for urban plots, flats or shops give sizes in square feet, but deeds and khatians record land in decimals. And when you measure land in feet, length × width gives square feet, which then has to be turned into decimals. This tool converts both ways.

Rules for calculating by hand

• Square feet to decimals: divide the square feet by 435.6.
• Decimals to square feet: multiply the decimals by 435.6.
• Square feet to katha: divide the square feet by 720.

An example

A rectangular plot 40 ft wide and 60 ft long = 40 × 60 = 2,400 sq ft. In decimals that is 2,400 ÷ 435.6 = about 5.51 decimals, and in katha 2,400 ÷ 720 = about 3.33 katha.

Keep in mind

• If the land is not rectangular: when the four sides differ, length × width alone gives a wrong result. Use the land measurement tool with all four sides.
• Square feet and square metres differ: 1 square metre is about 10.76 square feet. Check which unit the plan uses first.
